The history of SEO begins in the 90s, when search engines first appeared. By now, search engine optimisation has become an essential part of marketing strategy and ever-growing industry. If you would like to learn the basics of SEO, you have to be prepared for a lot of creative, technical, and analytical work. There are several method, all of which serve different purposes; however, the main point remains the same: we have to achieve the best position among the organic results.
To put it simply: the aim of SEO is to make sure that the right websites work for the right people.
It is not only about the perfect structure of the website but about its technical background as well. The website must be filled with quality and well-optimised content, which is adjusted to the needs of the audience. Naturally, it naturally has to be good enough that other websites will link to it.
What are search engines?
A search engine is a piece of software or application that performs searches in some kind of computer environment based on specific conditions (mostly keywords or expressions). These include Google, Bing, Ask, and Yahoo!.
These search engines use algorithms to find out how relevant/useful the contents of our website are to our visitors. This is what determines in what place we will be located among the search results.
Is SEO complicated?
It is not simple. Google uses more than 200 ranking factors; however, many of these are known. It is important to fill out website with quality content, to place links on it and to take into account technical data such as the loading speed of the website. Of course, this is only some of the criteria used, since many of them are kept secret by the companies who operate these search engines.
Naturally, you do not need to know all factors to find out the ranking of your website. To understand SEO, think of a bowl of soup. There are three important aspects:
- The bowl represents the technical matters behind the website (technical, on-page or on-site CEO)—without the proper bowl, the soup will splash all over the table.
- The soup itself represents the content of your website—this is the most important part. Bad content = no ranking, it’s that simple.
- The seasoning represents the high-quality links that improve the prestige of the website – this is the last ingredient, which makes the “SEO soup” perfect.

Even very basic changes can cause significant changes to how search engines see your website. Fortunately, there is much information available online for free; there are even courses and webinars that you can participate in.
